In 1979, Kevin McCrae won a foundation scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he studied ‘cello with Joan Dickson and won many prizes including the Helen Just ‘cello prize and the Earl of Dalhousie award. Since leaving there in 1983 with an honours degree and an honours diploma he has enjoyed a hugely successful career as a ‘cellist.

He initially played with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and as guest principal ‘cellist with the Hallé Orchestra before, in 1984, being appointed the principal ‘cellist of the Scottish Baroque Ensemble with whom he appeared as soloist on several occasions performing concertos by Haydn, Boccherini and Tartini. He held this post for two years before moving to join the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 1986 where he has been the sub-principal ‘cellist ever since! In his time with the SCO he has sat as principal for hundreds of concerts, performed and recorded (for Virgin Classics) as soloist in Sir Michael Tippett’s “Corelli Fantasia” with Tippett himself as conductor, and given scores of chamber music concerts with artists such as Jaimé Laredo, Sharon Robinson and Joseph Swensen. He is well respected as a continuo player and has played for singers such as Dame Janet Baker, Peter Schreier, Olaf Baer (with whom he has recorded Bach Cantatas with Peter Schreier as conductor), Michael Chance, John Mark Ainsley and Gerald Finley, to name but a few. Kevin will be leaving the SCO in September 2004 having given 18 years service! During his time with the SCO he has also appeared as guest principal ‘cellist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Ballet.

He has given many performances as soloist with orchestras and has performed ‘cello concertos by Elgar, Dvorak, Walton and the Beethoven triple concerto as well as the ones by Haydn, Boccherini and Tartini mentioned earlier.

Kevin is a member of the string quartet “Quartz” and for 10 years was the ‘cellist in the Leda Piano Trio with whom he recorded the album “Airs for the Seasons” (Springthyme Records). He has also recorded the CD “The Art of Robert Burns” with “The Musicians of Edinburgh” with guest Bonnie Rideout (for Scotstown Music).

Away from the classical field he plays regularly for various folk musicians and has played on albums for artists such as Dougie MacLean, Karen Matheson, The Wrigleys, Billy Jackson and Billy Ross.

Future engagements in 2005 include 3 performances of the Walton ‘Cello Concerto in Edinburgh, Haddington and Loughborough, some solo recitals throughout Scotland and another recording of Burns songs and early Scottish music for Scotstown Music.
